Billion Pill Pledge Announces Results in 2025 Annual Report, Demonstrating Significant Reductions in Post-Surgery Opioid Use
Goldfinch Health today released its 2025 Billion Pill Pledge Annual Report, showcasing remarkable progress in preventing unnecessary opioid prescriptions, improving health outcomes, and reducing addiction risk following surgery. The report highlights dramatic reductions in post-operative opioid utilization and improved patient outcomes across participating healthcare systems.
Key results include:
- 58% reduction in opioid pills prescribed after surgery
- 84% reduction in opioid refills after surgery
- 86% reduction in post-surgery readmissions
The Billion Pill Pledge program, which takes an evidence-based approach to opioid prevention through Enhanced Recovery protocols, patient education, and direct support from remote Nurse Navigators, has now expanded to 7 states. Overall, Goldfinch Health programs have supported patients in 47 states, with Nurse Navigators providing care in 14 languages and maintaining an average patient satisfaction rating of 9.4 out of 10.
“Our mission to erase 1 billion unnecessary opioid pills from our medicine cabinets and communities is gaining momentum because healthcare providers, patients, and communities recognize the effectiveness of this approach,” said John Greenwood, Co-founder of the Billion Pill Pledge and Goldfinch Health. “These results prove that better pain management and fewer unnecessary opioids not only reduce addiction risk—they improve outcomes and lower costs for patients, families, and taxpayers.”
The 2025 Annual Report builds on peer-reviewed research showing the program’s sustained impact. Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons documented a 53% reduction in opioid pills prescribed following joint replacement procedures at nine Iowa hospitals.
